What Does It Take to Become an Aircraft Maintenance Technician?

A degree in Aeronautical engineering is a much, much higher qualification. In developed countries, there is a huge difference in pay between a licensed mechanic and a “real” aeronautical engineering degree holder.

An AME is, in reality, a licensed mechanic course which is offered by various institutes. All you need an educational qualification is school 12th standard pass with science and mathematics.

An AME is a trade-based qualification, just like a licensed electrician or a licensed plumber which is given to all the qualified engineers.

Unfortunately, in the underdeveloped nation like India is, even an aeronautical degree may compel you to work as a mechanic to earn your living and that has distorted Indian economy severely; AME’s job prospects are rising very fast. With hundreds-hundreds-of airplanes ordered by Indian air carriers, there will be a huge requirement for AMEs, because rules require that only licensed AMEs to be allowed to certify transport aircraft.

Following are the skills an Aircraft Mechanics need to have to do their job:

• Adroitness- This is a hands-on job so mechanics need to be able to use their hands to work in the right way to work with various components, including pulling things apart and putting them back together so that they can execute it well.
• Detail description- The mechanics have to work to very high, precise standards. The ability to pay attention to the smallest detail or component and ensure every little part is in good condition and in place is important.
• Technical skills- It is the part of the job will be about reading different types of instruments such as pipes and gauges etc. The ability to understand how instruments work and diagnostic tools are therefore important and will help to construct it better.

• Troubleshooting- A mechanic must be able to get the cause of a problem and how to go about setting things as they should be.

For Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Course , the AME Colleges have to put a lot of effort and to get affiliation. It generally governed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Govt. of India. By completing this course in two and half year there is six-month training on operational aircraft.
