How to Get DGCA approved Aircraft Maintenance Engineering License

The BASICS

DGCA being the only authorized body that liaisons with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), only the License certified by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India is the prerequisite for practicing as an AME. In spite of AME being an Engineering, approvals from AICTE is not required.

To become an AME, one has to undergo training from a DGCA approved institute like AME Institute, and then pass the DGCA exams. To receive the basic aircraft maintenance engineering certificate license (BAMEL), one has to clear the six semesters.

GETTING A DGCA LICENSE

The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) sets the examinations that lead to obtaining of Basic Maintenance Engineer’s Certificate (BAMEC) and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s (AW) Licence.

The REQUIREMENTS

Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s Certificate (BAMEC)

Issued by DGCA in various categories BAMEC is the basic certificate, deemed necessary for obtaining a type rated AME license for inspection /certification of aircraft, engines & systems.

1. Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s Certificate

a) Age: MINIMUM 20 years

b) Eligibility Exam: Must pass 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics

c) Must pass papers I, II and III written examinations

d) Minimum of three years practical aeronautical engineering experience

e) medically fit


2. Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s Licence

a) Age : Minimum 21 years

b) Eligibility Exam: a)Must pass 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics/ equivalent

c) Must pass papers I, II and III written examination

d) Must pass paper IV approved

e) Must successfully pass the oral-cum-practical examination

f) Practical experience: minimum four years in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering field.

Required Experience For AME Licence Examination

a) Minimum Four years general experience: in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering field .

b) Minimum relevant specific experience: 0ne to two years.

Certification of Experience

a) All applicants must maintain personal recorded log book. This must contain all the experience gained on aircraft, engine and systems.

b)These must be

i) ) noted system-wise

ii) certified by Engineer-in-charge/ shift in charge/ Superintendent.

c) To change from mechanical to avionics stream a person will have to again acquire additional experience.
